I have the constraint of an application that requires 8bit color be used
for X. When I set any X provider (Exceed, xming, or even the local
machine's own console login) to 8bit color, the gdm greeter doesn't
display properly.

In the case of the local console login, it does at least allow one to
continue, there are just strange artifacts on the screen and errors.

In remote xdm sessions however, the gdm greeter box outline pops up on
the screen, then the session resets. This happens over and over,
continuously. I can't seem to find where to set gdm to default to (or
even allow...) 8bit color.

Suggestions? And note that I am using x86_64.
