Setting "redirect=atmail2":

    BalancerMember http://atmail1.mydomain.com:80   route=atmail1
loadfactor=1 redirect=atmail2

also seems to be letting trough some new load to atmail1.

Hrmf, I obviously read the "redirect" documentation wrong.. and I
think the right thing to use is to set status=D or status=S, but the
only documentation I've found on this setting is from

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_proxy.html

   status - Single letter value defining the initial status of this worker:
               'D' is disabled,
               'S' is stopped,
               'I' is ignore-errors,
               'H' is hot-standby and
               'E' is in an error state.

and I suppose I'm supposed to use disabled og stopped. Does anybody know
what the difference is on these ?

A guess out of my magical hat:

disabled = don't allow any traffic
stopped = prevent new sessions from being opened, allow already opened sessions to function
