I've used it (successfully) to change the order in which 3ware cards were used. IIRC, the default install detected the 9xxx series card before the 8xxx series one, but I wanted the array attached to the 8xxx series to be the root disk. Specifying 'nostorage' and then 'device 3w_xxxx' worked just fine.
