Although I'm hoping it's obvious, just wanted to make 100% sure we're talking 64-bit Linux here. I've seen the problem you describe on 32-bit system with large memory because the low memory area gets starved and the system spins all it's time trying to free up memory in that zone, but I've never seen it on 64-bit. I can't imagine your trying to run 64GB on a 32-bit box (I don't even think it's a Redhat supported config) but just wanted to ask to be sure.
