I may be misunderstanding what you are saying, but HP-UX is a SysVr4 based 
platform, not a BSD based platform.

I have not used HPUX, but I do use OS X and I've used other BSDs. Not 
everyone uses GNU utilities such as "ls," "tar" and so on so those 
differences might bite some people. And scripts.

AFAIK tar can be compatible with other implementations of tar, but isn't 
by default.
