That's not entirely true.   You can have a wildcard cert (*.example.com)
and/or a list of domain names in the subject alternative names.  This seems
to be a good description:

I googled for "openssl subject alternative name wildcard" and found this,
among other things:

I used tinyCA to generate my multiple wildcarded names cert, although it's
not the easiest of processes.
