I think the pam configuration changed between RHEL3 and RHEL4 and you'll need to do something different on RHEL3. I'm not even sure if telnet uses /etc/pam.d/remote, it may have something different. Mind you, I really don't like root login at all: I much prefer normal login and then sudo -- in a previous job when people habitually logged in as root it was often difficult to track down who it was that was holding some resource preventing something from happening. jch
