To possibly save other people the time I wasted...

Fedora EPEL (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL) provides talloc 2.

If you install the new-in-5.5 samba3x RPMs, which are necessary for 
compatibility with current Microsoft clients and servers, they require RHEL 
5.5's build of talloc 1, which is older than EPEL's talloc 2. yum can't resolve 
this.

I've seen references to a yum-priorities plugin. Should I install that manually 
(it's not available in either RHEL or EPEL) or is there a better supported way 
to ensure that RHEL wins over EPEL?

I could run yum --disablerepo=epel on demand or disable it permanently in 
yum.repos.d, but neither is attractive.
