We've bypassed this by switching to 'lsiutil' for this one box. Although as
it's a pretty funky utility (v1.62) we might start using it on all our
LSI-based RAID boxes.
It looks like our issue was to do with the BIOS' PCI scan order and coding
issues in mpt-status.
