we gave up on yum-updatesd and use a custom cronjob.



Did you take a look at RHEL 5.8 Beta? It looks like this bugzilla was fixed in yum-3.2.22-39.el5, which made 5.8 Beta (and therefore soon-to-be 5.8 GA).
