Strange! Updated this morning both python and python libs and yum
still  works for me (x86_64).

Same here : Many fully updated RHEL 6.2 x86_64, haven't seen that
problem either, even after forcing a python update on its own and
performing quite a few yum operations.

It turned out to be LD_LIBRARY_PATH which on some of our servers is set for Oracle. It points to $ORACLE_HOME/lib. Unsetting this environment variable makes yum working again.
