Germnay didn't have lingering traditions of autocratic
rule hampering their attempt at democracy, quite to the contrary. The Weimar
republic
was the most democratic government form at that time, with a center,
conservative, social democratic, communist and national socialist party.
The problem was that Germany was in the midst of its worst economic depression
due to
the world economic depression, high war repair payments from WW1, loan
repayments
from WW1 and economic isoloation due to the Versaille contract plus occupation
of its main industrial centrer.
Similar to the US, Germans voted for a strong right wing leader to get them out
of the econmic slump.
Hitler than simply denied loan payments. Wonder if the US government will do
the same to its foreign debt, the largest in the world.

I have to agree. Emil Fuchs' description* of how it felt to be in Germany
under Hitler's dominion feels increasingly relevant to our moral
situation.

But there are differences. Whether these are just differences in style
between fascism in one nation and in another--or temporary differences we
can expect to gradually disappear--or small differences in essence--Can
any of us say?

AJP Taylor, talking about Hitler vs other German politicians of his time,
said that their foreign policies were much alike, that none of them could
hope for popular support with a foreign policy significantly different
from Hitler's. The difference was in how brutal he was willing to be
against his own people.

I have no doubt that Bush, as an individual, is as brutal as Hitler, and
that his backers include people with few scruples against violence. Even
so, there has not been anything like Hitler's suppression of political
opposition... so far. Where Germany had lingering traditions of autocratic
rule hampering their attempt at democracy, we have lingering democratic
ideals restraining the neocons' grasp for power. It may be, that since
democratic opposition seems to be little actual threat to their plans,
they won't bother to suppress it. Or perhaps the psychology of tyranny
will lead them to seek increasingly tight control, even if they would in
fact be better off without it.

Other considerations here?
