Thanks for the suggestion.

I recompiled libdmapsharing with "--with-mdns=avahi" and got much the same 
thing with the avahi mdns service running

Sometimes libdmapsharing picks the wrong mDNS library (this happens in Arch 
Linux for instance). Maybe that is the problem.
How did you installed libdmapsharing? If you compiled yourself, you might be 
able to change the mDNS library when compiling.
