This message suggests that you are either not in the appropriate group or you are not running a policykit agent depending on your distribution behavior. The crash however shouldn't happen. It would be useful if you could start rhythmbox with gdb and get a backtrace so devs can check whether the problem comes from libmtp or rhythmbox. In any case, you should file a bug report at [1] with all the information you already provided plus the ones I'm suggesting as the mailing is not the preferred way to track bugs.
