As a purveyor of the truth, this is a bit of what I know, or think I know, about Debra Medina. She wants to replace the property tax by increasing the sales tax and/or allowing casino-style gambling. Have you thought that thru? She wants to legalize casino-style gambling in order to dedicate a portion of the revenues to property tax reduction. This would require passing an amendment to the Texas constitution which bars gambling on moral reasons. A property with low taxes is more valuable than one with high taxes, duh. If you had 2 identical homes sitting side-by-side with the only difference being how much property taxes were, which one would you be willing to pay more for? A house in Calif is more expensive than the same house in Massachusetts (if there is such a thing) because Mass depends on real estate tax to a larger degree than does Calif. (They like income taxes.) Medina's stated plan is sorta like paying your monthly mortgage without the provision for taxes. Likewise, renters would pay less because part of the monthly rent is the cost of real estate taxes paid by the owner. I've been strong on Medina for big picture reasons. I've preached "throw the bums out" for the last ten years or so. I call for people to defeat the incumbents at the primary so they don't have to vote with the other party in Nov. And now, for the first time in my activist life, I have a possibility to do just that. Go, girl! I've come to believe the possibility of her facing off with Perry in a run off. If that happens, all bets are off. It will make page one news and she will be beneficiary of a wave of new supporters who see her as a viable candidate for the first time.
