In 1947, Associate Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black amended the 1st Amendment to replace "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" with “separation of church and State”. The original first amendment that prevented the govt from establishing a religeon was twisted to mean there was a "wall" between the 2 placing restrictions on religion. In effect, what was a one-edged sword to protect religeon from the govt, became a double-edged sword allowing the govt to place restrictions on the 1st amendment.
In Black's misinterpretation, the govt can restrict prayers at football games, in public schools and a manger in the town square.
