Waco to attend the 14th memorial to honor the 78 Branch Davidians that died in America ’s worst mass murder. This wasn’t our first. We had gone to 3 or 4 memorials previously. Every one had been interesting and informative---and very, very different from each other. At the 5th (our 1st) it was quite factual with the Michigan Militia in attendance. The Dallas talk radio show host who broadcast a blow-by-blow description in real time was the Master of Ceremonies. (He was fired and run out of town for his efforts.) Jimmy Carter's Attny Genl, Ramsey Clark, defense attorneys and the foreman of their trial, were featured speakers. The media was all over that meeting, but little of it ever made it to the public. I suspect they got a call from the govt asking them not to remind US of the govt’s worst evil deed since America ’s founding. The Boston Massacre pales, in comparison. At another ceremony, radio personality Alex Jones presented them with their new meeting place giving Clive Doyle the keys to the chapel, newly built by volunteers of his listening audience. One time, we were treated with the music of one of the Davidians that had just been released from prison. The most revealing was one where the Davidian children were the center of attention. The program made you think you were in a public school assembly hall to root with pride for their children as they performed. It was absolutely amazing to see these amazingly resilient people enjoying a life very much like rest of America , even after surviving the wrath of the full force of govt. Each and every memorial was totally different than any other, and this year’s turned out to be no different. With only 40 or 50 people in attendance, Clive Doyle opened the meeting in a room reserved for the occasion at a local restaurant, instead of the usual meeting place at the chapel at Mt Carmel. He said it was a hard week with the reminder provided from Virginia Tech and a very bad year overall. Minister Fagan Livingston is the only known believer to still being held prisoner, but the others being released (they had their sentences reduced from 40 to 15 years on appeal) were first sent to half-way houses are not returning to the fold. The non-citizen sect members were being deported to their native lands, Australia , UK , etc. US citizens were forbidden to meet with their fellow Davidians as a condition of their parole, Doyle said, his voice breaking. They were dispersed across the country from sea-to-shining-sea. He went on to say, Fagan has changed his mind and is now looking forward to his return to the UK . Before that, the govt also broke all communication with the prisoners and the church. At first they blocked Doyle’s mail saying it was because he was a “felon”. When he pointed out he had been found not guilty of all charges, they found another excuse. So far, they haven’t even been able to determine how long the restrictions will be imposed. Obviously, the govt will oppose any reunion from now until Washington , DC , freezes over. The news on the home front wasn’t any better. The Branch Davidians had a new leader, a man named George Pace is now leading the congregation at Mt Carmel. His focus is to disassociate themselves with the horrid events of 1993. Clive Doyle now holds devotional meetings at his apartment. The meeting closed with a reading of the reading of the names of the 76 Davidians AND 4 BATF agents who died in Operation Show Time. PS The Davidians were found guilty of a misdemeanor gun crime and their sentences “enhanced” for using a gun in the commission of a crime, DESPITE THE FACT THAT ALL WERE FOUND NOT GUILTY of any other crime. “If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival.
