The United States Dressage Federation have an excellent booklet on arean
footing. Try their web site.

Subject: [RC] Arena footing and drainage

Anyone have any information on arena construction? The few books I have
found give very limited info, here in Northeast Ohio we have alot of clay
in the soil. I will be talking to some excavators in the next few weeks
and would like to be able to have an idea of what is needed. I want to end
up with an arena that will be able to be used year round - it will not be
covered. So I imagine drainage will be of primary concern as well as base
material. Most arenas around here use sand as the top layer, some use a
fine crushed limestone, one uses fibar, one uses mulch. Curious as to long
term maintenance needs and what problems might arise down the road with
different surfaces. Only going to get one shot at putting this in and
really don't want to end up with a mess. Thanks.
