That's pretty much a minimum for our "maintenance" horses as well--and those that are working get more. My best endurance horse the past few years would happily eat 40# of hay a day when working--yep, that is 4% of his body weight, since he weighed 975# in running shape. Since we free-feed most of our horses, we don't have much use for such devices--but I agree that for anything like that to have any use even with the horses that are meal-fed here, it would need to have much more capacity. Our hay is pretty close to 3 flakes being 10#, so even maintenance horses are getting 6 flakes per day, divided into two feedings.
