Hello,No personal experience but I noticed that IUCr Osaka 2008 poster nr. P29.01.07, p. C635 on the Abstract book, presents a 15 kg portable XRD & XRF instrument. The poster has examples on identification of pigments in archeological sites.
If I understood correctly they have designed it themselves.Author is Yoshinari Abe, Tokyo Univ. of Science, Dept. of Appl. Chemistry, Green Center Lab 1, 1-3 Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 162-8601.
