Hi Simon, For full disclosure, RIFE isn't being actively worked on at the moment. The 1.7 branch is still work in progress and not considered stable. Since I'm not doing any web development anymore I have very little incentive to continue working on the framework, certainly since there are only a small amount of users and not many contributions.
The DWR version that ships with 1.6.1 should just work, I'm using it on several sites. Any later version hasn't been tested however and there's a big chance that they are incompatible.
