One of the
new features of Rifidi v0.5 is Virtual IP Creation. For those that need
some help in creating virtual IPs please refer to the steps below.
Virtual IP Creation in Rfidi v0.5: There are two stages to successfully render a virtual IP useful. Firstly there is the actual virtual IP creation. Secondly, we need to register the IP to the reader. Creating a Virtual IP: Step 1: Start Rifidi Reader Launcher Step 2: Click on the Device Manager Tab Note: Make sure that the Reader is stopped Step 3: On the right panel marked - “Network Addresses for Selected Devices” click bottom button labeled - “Add Address” Step 4: Once you have clicked on Add Address an Alert should pop up asking you to input a New IP Address and an Netmask. If you are unsure about your netmask please leave it empty. Enter the new IP Address that you would like to spawn. Step 5: Click Ok to create a new IP Address. Step 6: In the “Network Addresses for Selected Device” panel you should see your newly added IP Address. Registering the Virtual IP with the Reader: Step 7: Go to the “Reader Settings” Panel Step 8: Scroll down to the IP Address Property, double click and change the IP to the newly created IP. Press enter to the IP to be registered. Step 9: Start the Reader via the Reader Control Panel. Congratulations! You have created a virtual IP and registered it to the Reader. You can now telnet into the reader via the new IP. Enjoy! Gotchas: DHCP Enabled Network Interfaces: If DHCP is enabled on your network interface, then this virtual IP creation will not work. This is due to a Windows limitation. To get around this problem, you can toggle from DHCP to Static IP. This will allow you to set Virtual IPs successfully. Please refer to the “Enabling Static IP" section for more details. Enabling Static IP: There are two steps in enabling Static IPs. First you must discover your current IP, then register it in your network TCP/IP Properties. The steps that are necessary are described below. Discovering your IP: Step 1: Run your command prompt. You can do this by clicking on Start -- > Run and type “cmd”. Step 2: Type “ipconfig /all” This will reveal your local Windows IP Configuration. Note: Your IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS Servers. Registering your IP in your network TCP/IP Properties: Step 3: Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Network connections --> Your Local Area Connection Step 4: Right click on your Local Area Connection and go to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Step 5: Click on Properties, while the TCP/IP option is highlighted. Step 6: Toggle your option from “Obtain an IP address automatically” to “Use the following IP”. Step 7: Input your IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway that you discovered during Step 2. Step 8: Toggle the option from “Obtain DNS Server address automatically” to “Use the following DNS Server addresses”. Step 9: Input your DNS Server that you have recovered from Step 2. Step 10: Click OK Congrads! You have changes your network configuration to Static IP. Note: Toggling
from DHCP Configuration to Static IP Configuration can result in
issues if the correct IP was not set. Please consult your Network
