ok - im just advising that it is not necessary for you to duplicate work that is already being done if this is for your own use then clearly you could just compile from the git source - if you are packaging with other people in mind then this is probably not worth doing - it's not clear how you would evven distribute it a new package would not be accepted into debian because that project is already in debian - they would want the existing package to be updated with the updated sources - if you really wanted to help update it then the best thing to do would be to contact the maintainer and ask to help - the alioth repo here https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/opendht.git shows that "New upstream version 1.3.4" has already been packaged
