go to http://pc40.mpier.uni-frankfurt.de/rioio/
They have the schematic that requires no modifications to the Rio for a
remote.
I knew I still had those links, got love Netscape for keeping bookmarks as
an HTML file, just wished IE did something similar.

Well, I was thinking of putting another jack on the pmp300 (2.5mm mono) to
let me hook up an external remote...I've been haing outrageous amounts of
trouble finding a 4-conductor 3.5mm connector, you see. My only problem
is I'm not sure where to put the jack. I took apart my pmp300 and there
seems to be very little room for anything. I think I'll try to cut down
the jack I bought and see if I can't squeeze it in between the two circuit
boards...once I have time for that sort of thing, of course.
As for your battery door, you could probably just put some kinda clever
connector in where the battery should be and maybe make an external
battery pack (for one cell...hmm). Heck, you could put in a stereo jack
and make a remote which has the battery inside of it, then run the power
along one line, the remote along another, and the last one for common (the
remote, so you know, is just a bunch of resistors).
Have Fun!
