I should suggest running your card through a fresh reformat looking for bad
blocks. AS flash media degrades over time you may be developing bad blocks
in the media. (in a 18 month period I made the internal memory in my
pmp-300 mostly worthless by refreshing so much.)
18 months, with a refresh daily is pretty close to the lifetime of a flash
card.

Can someone help me? I have a Rio 500 that I have owned for about 18
months.
It has firmware version 2.15 and a 65 Mb smart media card. I use it almost
exclusively for listening to Audible.com files. It has started acting
erratically. Very often, I press play and it will play for a second or two
and then stop. I have noticed that the small "R" next to the time remaining
count down disappears. When this happens, I am unable to access any of the
settings or controls. Thinking it might be corrupted files, I have tried
erasing the files, reinstalling them, reinstalling different files and
installing music files. The problem reoccurs. The only thing that seems to
help is "percussive Maintenance." Any suggestions? Would reinstalling the
firmware help?
