Just for the record. I had the same no-usb error on SOS history with one of my probes.
I corrected it by mounting the usb on a pc, deleting all partitions and place it back to the ripe atlas probe usb port. The atlas probe rebuilt the usb format automatically and the probe came back online. Sent via RIPE Forum -- https://www.ripe.net/participate/mail/forum
