greetings forum-readers, i've been a SB2 user for about 5 months now, and am happy to report about how well the SB2 and infrant technology's ReadyNAS 600 work together. for those who don't know about this great combo, the ReadyNAS 600 (and their new X6) provide BOTH a NAS machine to store your files, AND processing power to run slimserver! you do not need to turn on your pc if you have a ReadyNAS running slimserver - just your NAS and SB2! the ReadyNAS can upload an image of slimserver, and run it upon bootup, automatically.
but, there's a little caveat, which is why i am creating this new thread. the ReadyNAS's processor takes a very long time to re-scan music libraries. and, during re-scan, the slimserver running on the ReadyNAS is not available - the processor is too busy to scan and play at the same time. it was suggested on infrant's forums that it mught be possible to use slimdevice's database creation code in stand-alone mode, create a database on the pc, and the upload it to the ReadyNAS. of course, there is the file path mapping problem (paths to the files will appear differently to the ReadyNAS vs. the pc), but that can be taken care of with perl code. is there a way to use the database creation perl routines stand-alone? i'm not familiar enough with the names and locations of all the perl code that went into slimserver, and was hoping for guidance from those who know. :) can this be done? and if, can someone supply a command line that would invoke the proper perl routines? thanks in advance for any guidance anyone has about this! best regards, -sherm -- shermoid "you are only young once, but you can be immature forever" "life is uncertain; eat dessert first" - anonymous please visit my mcintosh website: http://alumni.cse.ucsc.edu/~sherman _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
