I have noticed that ACAD is very slow. My problem though is that I'm doing all this on my about-to-be-replaced 5 year old computer so believe it or not almost everything is going through a single USB1 hub.. my scanner, the CD reader I am ripping the CD from, and the hard drive that I'm storing the FLAC files onto. This means that while I'm ripping it is almost impossible for the scanner to get any USB bandwidth so it takes forever. At least with downloading cover art from the internet that doesn't take any USB bandwidth so I have been setting a cover art search going at the same time as the rip and that's worked really well.
For my classical CDs, and thankfully I only have about 30, I think I will probably end up modifying my procedures and I will just rip all 30 and then have a big scanning session afterwards where I add the cover art.
