Wav files do not have metadata (tags).
I haven't checked the source code lately, but I believe it looks
at the directory structure of your .wav files and tries to guess.

There is a much better solution. And for you, it doesn't require
you to touch your CDs. Use FLAC. It is lossless, so you keep
all of the audio quality of the RedBook CD. And it supports tags.
And it yields you about a 50% compression, saving disk space.
And if you have a SqueezeBox2, then the SB2 supports FLAC and you
save bandwidth, which can make a difference with wireless connections.

You didn't mention what ripping software you are using, but
several of the good and free ones support one click ripping to flac
with tags
