Can you just confirm one thing - the artists that are duplicated, are you seeing different albums under each of the entries, or the same ones? (I think you said its the first, just want to be clear about that).
My next step would be to open up your favoured tagging program and have a really good look at the tags. (e.g. MP3TAG). See if you can spot a pattern with the split of the albums for different artists. Were they for example ripped by two different programs which is writing the tags in a subtly different way? Are they different file formats? One other thing - is iTunes involved at all here?
