Yes, they are different.

I'm under the impression flac creates an RG tag holder for album gain
in each track as it's ripped, saves a copy of the track gain applied,
and repeats until all the tracks are done. It then does a quick compute
of those copies of saved track gain values, and goes back and writes the
album gain tags with the correct value. Can't see this action taking
much time for a computer to do as the album tags have already been
created and padded at the track rip stage.

Now I guess that if you removed a track from the 'ripping' directory
before all the tracks are ripped, then that track would have the album
gain tag in only its padded form. I've never tried that to see what the
result would be though :)

And then you get to the 'how does the flac CLI know it's dealing with
the last track' question ;)
