Yes, USB1 is that slow. Add a cheap USB2 card. I speak from bitter
experience.

I decided to rip all my CDs onto an external hard drive using my old
computer prior to splashing out on a new PC and an SB2. Big mistake!
Because both my CD/DVD drive and external hard drive were on the USB1
bus I decided it was safest to rip to a temp directory on my internal C
drive and then, once the rip was finished, do a copy of the data onto
the external hard drive (to avoid contention on the USB bus between the
CD reader and the external hard drive). To rip a single CD was taking me
about 20-25 minutes to do the rip and then about 15 minutes to copy to
the external hard drive, i.e. about 40 minutes total. On my new PC it
takes about 5 minutes for the whole operation.
