A quick summary around this topic, which I hope may be helpful: You can intercept the data played by a computer-based DVD-A player (eg WinDVD) and capture it to a file, if you can still find the software. Most DVD-A discs have a stereo version of the content (and an AC3/Dolby Digital version, for that matter).
SACDs are not playable on a computer, so this doesn't apply, and in fact neither SACD or stand-alone DVD-A discs are common any more, though you'll find plenty of DualDiscs (CD-compatible one side, DVD the other) with DVD-A content on the DVD side. There are two benefits of the high-resolution formats: the higher sample rates deliver higher audio quality, in theory at least, which you may or may not notice; and they also offer surround mixes, which you certainly /will/ notice if you have a surround playback system. The current SS/SB system does not support higher sample rates than 48kHz, so if you are not interested in surround you might as well rip the CD side/layer of a DualDisc or hybrid SACD and save yourself the unpleasant bending. If you're interested in surround, the only format that lends itself easily to this at present is DTS, where a DTS CD effectively 'wraps' the surround bitstream so that it looks like standard PCM from a CD, hence you can rip it normally. It should be possible to do this with other decodable surround formats but it isn't done for you at this point. Using FLAC, you can rip DTS CDs with ease and play them back into a surround decoder. As previously noted, disable adjustment of the SB digital outputs so they are always at full level, otherwise you'll just get noise. The SB2 and SB3 are bit-accurate end to end, so a ripped DTS CD will decode correctly; the SB1 appears to invert the sign of the data (so to get the files to work you would have to break them for a more recent player), and I can't get the Roku boxes to work at all, so I suspect they are simply not bit-accurate, period.
