Hm, I played around a little with the mplayer.sh script (and deleted the
"Local File:" part at the top) but it doesn't quite work with .m4a
files.

After adding some debug output I can see that the script gets started
and immediately quits again for a couple of times (2-4), then it plays
the file to the end. But when I skip, it won't kill the decoding
process.
I wasn't able to find the reason why the mplayer process gets
killed/quits on startup. You hear some clicking noise, so it seems that
it starts to decode.
Perhaps it has something to do with the /fd/3 "hack" on FreeBSD? ->

When playing and switching RA streams the script works just fine.

So it would be very nice when you could give me a pointer how to patch
faad.
