thanks for the responses and I misspoke in my post...I actually can't
see the tags in Windows Explorer...only Winamp.

I think I figured out what was going on with the Linux tags...the
character set encoding was configured in Grip for Unicode..I just
switched it to ISO and I think the tags are now visible when I bring
the FLAC file over to Windows (at least the first one worked).  I will
report back if this did, in fact, definitively fix the problem.

ps 400 cds ripped to flac in 2 days on 5 computers...only a 1,600 more
