Well, I jumped the gun a bit on posting that problem... After posting I noticed that it really didn't matter what the change was - as long as I changed the filename, WHAT I changed it to didn't matter.
So, on a hunch, instead of rescanning the music library only for changes, I did the full clear and rescan everything. That did the trick! All my files seem to play just fine now. Cleve - I wonder if yours ended up working not so much because of the firmware upgrade, but because it did a complete rescan of your music library? Anyway, I'm just thrilled with the device now.
