Thanks, ideasculptor, for the tips on Max. But, as you predicted, since
I now know it's not an irreversible choice, I decided to encode in
ALAC. 417 albums later I'm happily listening to the Moody Blues on my
new SB3.

I can't imagine trying to manage and tag FLAC files on the Mac. iTunes
makes this a very easy process - and it's clear that major editing is
needed to clear up the Freedb info. Multiple CD sets get separated
nonsensically; my Sanata albums have Japanese track names...! If I have
to use ALAC to be able to stick with iTunes, so be it. This way, too, I
can play the same files on another machine with iTunes, or on an iPod
if I get one. And Slimserver happily converts the ALAC files to FLAC to
stream them to the SB3. There are no dropouts, and playback is gapless.


Now all I need is a linear, regulated power supply!
