A couple of notes about CDex:

It has the capability to "get the CD bits correct even on damaged
discs".  It includes the CDparanoia library, which you can turn on in
the CD-ROM settings window.

It pipes the ripped WAV data directly to the external encoder without
saving it to a temp file on the disc.  I think it's also possible to
save the WAV to disc, then convert to MP3, but that isn't the default.
