A couple of notes about CDex: It has the capability to "get the CD bits correct even on damaged discs". It includes the CDparanoia library, which you can turn on in the CD-ROM settings window.
It pipes the ripped WAV data directly to the external encoder without saving it to a temp file on the disc.
