Probably the wrong mics in the wrong places originally, with what seems like little attention paid to the final sound during the remaster. The cymbal when being ridden is way too hot. It translates to static on my system. In fact on I'm Old Fashioned, it sounds like a tape version that's had too much sun. The brush strokes create a strange, annoying (on my system), distorted tape hiss sound. The bass seems to be lost in the mix, and the piano not particularly good sounding or present. On the title track, the beginning is brilliant musically. I love the way the piano and bass work together, and at the last minute the drum hits twice in synch with them before kicking off the song. Wilco does a phenomenal job of this effect live- and I was delighted to find an earlier source of the same idea. Like Einstein said 'the key to creativity is learning to hide your sources'. I DO like the sound of the brass. No amount of volume can make it sound bad. Three dimensional and very nuanced. Perfect. However when I put in Kind of Blue 1997 columbia/sony version I am disgusted by the sound of brass. There is literally distortion throughout the recording- but especially attached to Miles on louder notes. Sad really, because the piano has depth and space unlike RVG miking. The bass lines are easier to follow and well represented in the 'stage'. The high hat isn't nearly as annoying, although the drums in general are poorly mixed. All in all, I find it more listenable- but still put on kind of blue if I feel like hearing brass instruments. I'm sure this is all very system dependent, so when I say deleted, I still have a backup (the original) in case a future system should change (mask) the sound for the better. I doubt I'll go back to one of those systems though.. Does your question mean I'm stuck with this version at best? -- Skunk ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21807 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
