Could be DRM on the CD. There are some non-standard CDs that differ from the official CD standard in a way that will confuse your computer but still play on most audio CD players. You'll notice that they won't actually have the usual CD logo on the case: they can only use that if they conform to the standard. If this is the problem, try http://www.isobuster.com/ which can read just about anything. You'll have to use this to get wav files and then convert to your codec of choice from the wav.
