the DVD player, and see if playing the same track through the DVD
player's digital output produces the same level problems.  I think that
any jitter in the digital signal shouldn't produce the same kind of
artefacts as it would when listening to ordinary PCM stereo, but I
can't hear it anyway so can't be sure.  The pre-amp will be decoding
the DTS stream to 6 channels so (excuse what might seem a patronising
suggestion!) it's also worth checking what that device is doing to the
levels, if anything.
