I ran my 60Gb iPod with Apple Lossless files for a while. Managed to get 2,500 songs on it but battery life was between 3 and 4 hours. Now moved over to MP3 files and I can get 10,000 songs on it (if I had that many!) but more importantly battery life is about 16 hours with earphones and nearer 20 hours running into the car Aux input.
I still use FLAC into my (high-end) Hi-Fi but must admit I cannot really tell the difference between lossless and lossy formats either in the car or via my (£500) Shure earphones via the iPod.
