According to Apple's site:

Therefore, since it's NOT an Apple only codec as Apple Lossless is, is
there any reason SS can't support it as it does FLAC?  I realize it's
NOT lossless like FLAC/ALAC is, but I've got so much stuff that's
already ripped AAC and don't want to re-rip the 4000+ songs again. 
I'll take the slight loss in quality for time saved.. my wife will
appreciate it, too.
