I've used a LiteON USB DVD drive with success.  Good speed on most CDs,
good C2 error info.  It does get slow on disks with errors.

If you use a ripper that uses C2 error info to correct on a single pass
(dBPowerAmp is one), there can be problems.  Some chipsets that
implement the USB connection in the drive may not support all the
commands needed for collecting C2 error info.

Putting a PATA or SATA DVD drive in a generic USB enclosure might not
be a good idea.  Those chipsets are more more likely to fail to support
all the commands needed for retrieving audio info.  You are less likely
to have problems with a USB DVD drive (purpose-built by the
manufacturer.)
