If the file have extension m4a - then normally SS will transcode them on
the fly.  The application to transcode the files needs Apple QuickTime
installled - is Quicktime installed ?

If you can play these files in the Quicktime player - there is a
another common problem with a supporting application called
"socketwrapper". 
Socketwrapper can be prevented from running by some networking or
security s/w. Make sure socketwrapper has been entered in the security
s/w/ (e.g. firewall) as a trusted app.

What security s/w have you installed ?
