But this is really a false dichotomy. There is no reason that we have
to choose between Track/Album/Artist and a more complete and
customizable approach. The beauty of J. River's product is that you can
keep the Track/Album/Artist if you want and add any number of other
fields along side of them. You can then create as many views of the
data as you want. The one I usually used to browse my classical was
subgenre-composer-artist-work. I had another view that I used for
nonclassical, genre-artist-album-track. You can still have
track/album/artist for use with other players, you can add composer for
your iPod. But you can also maintain a rich database of your music which
can include enemble, conductor, whatever. 

And because the fields in the database are user defined and the way the
data is viewed is also designed by the user, a single solution does not
have to be found to satisfy each users needs. Robin, Bill, Ceejay and I
can each have the tagging scheme that works for our individual needs.
And because artist is differentiated from composer, I can search for
either performances by Bernstein or compositions of Bernstein without
confusion.
