OT:

My A/V receiver uses a dB scale for volume, -50 dB to +10 (or 15) dB.

This does seem to correspond to actual dB when playing its
internally-generated pink noise test tones, a change of 1 dB does
correspond to a change of 1 dB on an SPL meter.

So - if I was to calibrate the system, does this mean that -14 on the
volume scale should produce 89 dB SPL?

Currently it's calibrated to 75 dB at 0 on the volume scale, although
when calibrating I understand it's attenuated by either 15 or 20 dB,
can't remember which. Certainly 0 dB when playing anything back would
blow the speakers off the floor.
