I'm happy to report that after tagging all my compilations with compilation=1, and an overnight "clear and rescan", my Artists # has dropped by 2/3 and there are now lots of entries under "Artists > Various Artists". Admittedly, clicking on many end up as blank screens, but that sounds like another thread ... ;-)
