Well, since the drive head doesn't actually touch the drive surface - no. I'm not a hard drive expert but still...just think how many times certain bits of OS code are read off the disc and there's no trouble there.
The drive has to physically fail for there to be surface wear. The head has to touch the surface or dirt/dust has to get in.
