you can have multiple iTunes libraries. So you can start iTunes without
the hard drive, and use the library on the internal hard disk to rip
the CD, if using iTunes as the ripper.

Of course you need to eventually add tracks to the main library, but
that's easy enough.

iTunes defaults to the last used library on start up, and it's not
intuitive how to get it to change. What you actually have to do is to
press shift when launching iTunes, then it will give you the option to
choose a library or create a new one.
